Motivation

Drought is rarely associated with Alpine regions, but drought has caused a variety of impacts even in this humid mountain climate documented by various sources. This natural hazard produce a complex web of impacts that span many sectors of the society, including economy and may reach well beyond the area experiencing a drought. Accordingly, the reduction of vulnerability to drought in Alpine and pre-Alpine regions is required in order to minimize future impacts from upstream to downstream areas and across political boundaries. Therefore, Alpine droughts’ sound information as well as knowledge of impacts is essential. But drought-specific data on the multiple losses in mountain regions are scarce. Thus, the focus on droughts' risk in the Alpine region is required in order to be better prepared and less vulnerable to upcoming drought impacts.
